In 1965 I took up a lectureship in the School of Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art and stayed through good and bad until 1995 when I took the opportunity to retire early and spend more time in my studio.

"What kind of pictures do you make?"

Always a difficult question to answer verbally. Influences and stimulii can be diffuse and difficult to identify precisely. Travel has always been a prime source of new imagery for me and I have a deep and abiding interest in the human figure.

It is important to me that my work displays the impulses that first prompted it. I am also careful to use the best available materials to ensure that my work remains a quality and enduring creation.

Another, quite different, influence is hereditary. The Victorian music-hall singer Matilda Wood (Marie Loyd) was my fathers great aunt.
